Breaking news

We call on the global democratic leaders to condemn Russia’s brutal and inhumane actions, immediately provide maximal military and economic support for Ukraine to throw the Russian invaders out of its lands, and reject any “peace plans” suggesting to “freeze” the war or start negotiations with the aggressor state until full de-occupation of Ukrainian lands. We also call on Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine worldwide to take to the streets and demand that their governments act resolutely and provide Ukraine with all support required to defeat the deadly Putin regime.

The destruction of the Kakhovka NPP and its dam that was carried out by the Russian terrorists early in the morning on June 6, 2023, is another war crime, according to the Geneva Convention and the biggest man-made disaster in Europe since the 1986 Chornobyl catastrophe. It will also have countless far-reaching and long-lasting negative consequences for all regions in the south of Ukraine.

▪️First of all, it further endangers the safety situation at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which relies on water from the Kakhovka reservoir to provide power for the turbine condensers of the plant and cool its reactors.

▪️Secondly, the dam’s destruction will drain out the reservoir leaving approximately one mln Ukrainians in the country’s southern regions, including Crimea, without permanent access to fresh water. This will also devastate the economy, particularly the Ukrainian metallurgy sector and agribusiness that highly depend on water. Such a blow to Ukraine’s agriculture will further deepen the global food crisis and influence billions of families across the globe.

▪️Thirdly, the floodwaters will ruin at least 80 towns and villages in the Kherson Oblast and the entire region’s ecosystem. As soon as the flood wave reaches, massive pollution of the Black Sea will follow.

Russia’s heinous terrorist act, an act of unimaginable and irresponsible barbarism at the Kakhovka NPP, is one more clear demonstration of the fact that Russia and criminal Putin himself don’t care about the future of Ukrainian lands, which the Russian propaganda claims to be “historically Russian.” By destroying the Kakhovka dam, the Russians have condemned Russian-occupied southern Ukraine to turn into a desert, literally and figuratively.

Even Crimea, "the holy cornerstone of the Russian spirit," as Putin claims, is doomed, as the dam's destruction will inevitably lead to a disruption in the supply of fresh water to the peninsula.

The only purpose of Russia’s war against Ukraine is the genocide of the Ukrainian people and the complete devastation of Ukrainian lands. Russia once again proved itself a major global threat with its ruthless actions. The international democratic community must stand united and join all possible efforts to support Ukraine and stop this pure evil – not only for the sake of Ukraine itself but for the whole world’s sake.

BREAKING NEWS:

Destruction of the zoo "Fairy Tale Forest"

On 6 June 2023, as a result of the destruction of the dam at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by Russian troops, the Fairy Tale Forest Zoo, located in the Kherson region, in the city of Nova Kakhovka, on the territory of the S. M. Faldzynskyi Park, was destroyed.

The Kakhovka hydroelectric power station is located 5 km from the Russian-held Nova Kakhovka. Water intake for the North Crimean Canal, which has been unblocked by the occupiers since the beginning of the invasion, is carried out in the Kakhovka reservoir.

This hydroelectric power plant is the lowest and last (sixth) stage in the Dnipro reservoir cascade. The hydroelectric power plant near Nova Kakhovka ensures the annual regulation of the Dnipro river flow to ensure that the southern part of Ukraine has electricity and water.

On 20 October 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that Russia was preparing to stage a new large-scale terrorist attack - to blow up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in Kherson region. At the same time, he listed other consequences that could result from the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP and its dam:

- Hundreds of thousands of residents of southern Ukraine would be in the danger zone and could suffer from the resulting floods

- water supply to a large part of southern Ukraine and Crimea could be disrupted

- a Russian terrorist attack could leave the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant without water for cooling, since water for the ZNPP is taken from the Kakhovka reservoir

- the overall devastating environmental, humanitarian, and man-made consequences of such a terrorist attack would reach the scale of a historic catastrophe

On 6 June 2023, Russia destroyed the dam at Kakhovka HPP. Villages on the right bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region are under threat of flooding. Evacuations are underway.

In addition to the large-scale damage that the occupiers have caused to the population, large areas of valuable natural resources have been affected. We have lost the Fairy Tale Grove Zoo and Recreation Complex, located in the Kherson region, in the town of Nova Kakhovka, in the territory of the S.M. Faldzinsky Park.

It is one of the best places to visit for the whole family, children and adults, residents and visitors.  In 1992, in the S.M. Faldzynskyi Park on the banks of the Dnipro River, the director of the private enterprise "Vidrodzhennia" Navrotskyi M.R. organised a family recreation centre, opened a mini-zoo, and decorated the place with his own carvings - 150 wooden sculptures of fairy-tale characters. Some of these sculptures formed the Glade of Fairy Tales, which occupies 0.9 hectares of land.

The zoo was home to 150 animals and birds representing different parts of both Ukraine and the world: pheasants, turtles, ostriches, owls, wild geese, mouflons, peacocks, roes, nutria, squirrels, etc. The landscape architecture of the Fairy Tale Grove is also interesting, taking into account the peculiarities of the local terrain and the presence of natural springs. A lake, ponds, fountains, waterfalls, a flower garden, green spaces, pavilions, benches, beautiful bridges - all of this has been destroyed by Russia!

The Russians will be responsible for depriving people in the south of Kherson region and in Crimea of water. The most terrible act of their terrorist attack is the destruction of some settlements, the biosphere and valuable natural ecosystems.
